RV solar panel
Also known as: Solar panel, PV panel, Campervan solar, Caravan solar
A photovoltaic panel on the RV roof that charges the leisure batteries from the sun and extends off-grid time.
A solar panel is a must-have for boondockers. It charges whenever you’re driving or parked, with no generator needed. A typical motorhome gets by with 200–400 W in total.
How it works: monocrystalline panels on the roof charge the leisure battery through an MPPT controller. MPPT is about 30% more efficient than PWM. In a Russian winter — overcast skies and a low sun — output drops to 30–50% of summer levels.
In summer, a 300 W panel in Karelia generates 1–1.5 kWh a day — enough for the fridge, pumps, LED lighting and a laptop. In winter, only lights and pumps.
Cost: a 250 W panel is RUB 8,000–12,000, an MPPT controller RUB 5,000–10,000, installation RUB 3,000–5,000. It pays for itself in 2–3 seasons compared with paying RUB 1,000 a night at a campground for a 220V hookup.
- ✓Unlimited electrical self-sufficiency
- ✓Silent, unlike a generator
- ✓Pays for itself in 2–3 seasons
- −Low output in winter
- −You have to keep the roof out of the shade
- −Snow in winter — needs sweeping off
