The Saratov Reservoir appeared in the late 1960s when the Volga was dammed by the hydroelectric station at Balakovo, and it stretches upriver almost as far as Tolyatti. The shores vary: steep and high in places, gently sloping and sandy in others, with popular spots for relaxing and fishing. Turn-offs to the water are often unsurfaced — after rain it is better not to take a heavy vehicle right down to the bank.
