Geomagnetic storms today, 11 October 2026: Kp 6, G2 storm

The Kp index now, a three-day forecast in three-hour steps and a 27-day outlook. Kp 5 and above counts as a storm. When a storm is on, we show the latitude from which it is visible as aurora.

In short

A geomagnetic storm is a disturbance of Earth's magnetic field by the solar wind. Its strength is measured by the planetary Kp index from 0 to 9: up to Kp 4 is quiet, Kp 5 is a minor storm (G1), Kp 7 is strong (G3), Kp 9 is extreme (G5). The index is the same for the whole planet, so “storms in London” and “storms in Edinburgh” are one and the same number; what differs is the latitude from which the storm is visible as aurora. CAMPLY shows solar wind from a satellite for the next hour, the Kp forecast for three days and the 27-day outlook.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about geomagnetic storms

Will there be a geomagnetic storm today?
The forecast peak for today is Kp 6: that is a G2 storm. Kp 5 and above counts as a storm. This line refreshes every three hours.
Do storms differ between cities?
No. The Kp index is planetary — one number for every city. What differs is whether you'll see the aurora: Edinburgh needs about Kp 6, London about Kp 7.
How accurate is the forecast?
Solar wind measured by a satellite reaches Earth in about 40 minutes — that is the most reliable horizon. The three-day and 27-day forecasts are model-based and lose accuracy with range.
Do geomagnetic storms affect health?
There is no reliable scientific evidence of a direct effect on health. We show the geomagnetic data as it is, with no medical advice.
