The site was found in 1924 on the northern edge of the village, and excavations have been carried out since the 1920s. It produced the elegant female figurines — Palaeolithic Venuses — now held in museum collections, and it was here that a sunken Upper Palaeolithic dwelling was first studied in Russia. Today it is a spot for those interested in archaeology: what there is to see is the headland itself and the Don valley.
