The kremlin was built in the second half of the 16th century from bricks taken from the dismantled buildings of Golden Horde Sarai, soon after the annexation of the Astrakhan Khanate. Inside are the Dormition Cathedral, the Trinity Cathedral, and towers and walls open to guided tours. It stands in the city centre; entry to the grounds is free, museum sites by ticket.
