The remains of a large medieval city lie by the village of Samosdelka in Kamyzyaksky District, on the right bank of the Old Volga. Some archaeologists connect the site with the Khazar capital Itil and the later city of Saksin; the argument is not settled. On the ground there are excavations and traces of ramparts in the delta; it is worth seeing for the history, and the last kilometres of road are unsurfaced.
